Gamecocks expected to hire Mainieri

Multiple resources are reporting that South Carolina is targeting former LSU coach Paul Mainieri to be the Gamecocks' next head baseball coach.

Teddy Cahill of Baseball America first reported the possibility.  Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball.com and John Whittle of The BigSpur.com also confirmed the information. Mainieri would replace Mark Kingston, who was fired June 2 after seven seasons in Columbia.

USC's Board of Trustees has a meeting set for 4 p.m., with approval of athletics contracts on the agenda. In addition to baseball, USC is also looking for head coaches in men's golf and softball.

Mainieri, 66, coached LSU to the 2009 College World Series championship. He won four SEC regular-season titles and six SEC Tournament titles. His He retired after the 2021 season, with super regional appearances in his final two seasons. He served as a special advisor to head coach Brandon Schmidt at Baton Rouge Community College this season.

Counting stints at St. Thomas, Air Force and Notre Dame, Mainieri built a 1,505-777-8 record. His teams made six trips to Omaha and 15 other appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

Reports have indicated Terry Rooney, recruiting coordinator at LSU, could be joining Mainieri in Columbia as his pitching coach. Rooney was head coach at UCF for eight seasons.

Reports have also stated there are efforts to keep current assistant coach Monte Lee on staff. Lee has been serving as interim head coach since Kingston's departure.
