McGuire moves to Winthrop
Winthrop has hired Mike McGuire away from USC Upstate to become the Eagles' head coach.
"I would like to thank President Edward Serna and Athletic Director Chuck Rey for this opportunity and the commitment they are making to Winthrop baseball," McGuire said in a release issued by the school. "This is a program that at one time was among the top mid major programs in the country. I believe it can be once again, and I'm excited to get to work."
McGuire had two previous stints at Winthrop as an assistant (1997-2002 and 2006-2011). He replaces Tom Riginos, who was let go after going 19-29-1 in the 2024 season.
McGuire, a former player at the University of South Carolina, was head coach at USC Upstate the last five seasons. Before that, he was head coach at Morehead State for seven seasons. He also coached Louisburg (junior college) to 52 wins in 2012 and was head coach at Lander from 2003-5.

Spartans promote Sweeney
USC Upstate quickly named Kane Sweeney as its replacement for Mike McGuire. Sweeney has served as McGuire's assistant for the last five seasons, when the Spartans won 159 games.
"I am truly honored to become the next head baseball coach at USC Upstate," Sweeney said in a release issued by the school. "USC Upstate has been a special place for me and my family. I have seen what this program is capable of and am excited to establish a new future of Upstate baseball."
Sweeney came to Upstate with McGuire after serving as an assistant for him at Morehead State, Sweeney's alma mater.
