Winthrop recruit named top catcher

Winthrop recruit Chance Furnish of Rowan County High School was named winner of the Johnny Bench Award as top high school catcher in Kentucky. The award was announced June 25, but I didn't learn he was a Winthrop recruit until today. Cole Messina of South Carolina won the national award for college baseball.

Yankees sign Veach

University of South Carolina pitcher Chris Veach has signed a free agent contract with the New York Yankees. Veach, a Chapin native, started his career at Presbyterian before transferring to USC. He had a 3.63 ERA in 26 appearances in 2024.

Baal connects

Former USC Union star Austin Baal homered in his first professional at-bat for the State College Spikes of the MLB Draft League. Baal hit .363 at Shippensburg University in 2024.
