The Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction, Colo., reports changes are coming to the NJCAA Division I playoffs and World Series.
The article by Adam Busack quotes a committee sportsman as saying the 10-team World Series will be trimmed to eight teams beginning in 2028.
But the playoffs to determine the World Series qualifiers will be expanded to 32 teams. The playoff field will consist of 20 automatic qualifiers and 12 at-large teams.
Eight four-team super regionals would then determine the eight-team JUCO World Series field.
The new format would appear to open the door for more than one team from a region to qualify for event, played at Sam Suplizio Field annually around Memorial Day.
Under the current format, only the tournament champion for Region 10 (the Carolinas and Virginia) can reach Grand Junction through the East District Tournament. There have been years in the past when a second Region 10 team earned an at-large berth, but still competed in the same district as the champion for one World Series spot.
The new format might lead to a second team from Region 10 going to a different regional than the champion.
