State schools may lose valuable resource

A junior college baseball program with a history of sending productive players to South Carolina colleges and universities is looking to become a four-year school itself.

Young Harris College, in Young Harris, Ga., recently received accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to begin offering four-year degrees.

The school's Web site indicates plans are to seek membership in the NCAA and play on the division II level.

The program has sent several players to state schools, including current Clemson infielder Matt Sanders, current Furman catcher Matt Hemingway, current USC pitchers Jay Brown and Grimes Medlin, ex-USC pitcher and current Arizona Diamondback Billy Buckner and former College of Charleston outfielder Joey Friddle, who also made an intermediate stop at USC.

Young Harris' most prominent baseball alum may be Nick Markakis of the Baltimore Orioles.
