USC, Clemson rank in attendance top 10

This comes as no surprise to fans of either school, but the University of South Carolina and Clemson University ranked in the top 10 among NCAA Division I schools in average home attendance in 2008, according to NCAA figures announced earlier this month.

The Gamecocks, playing their second "final" season at Sarge Frye Field, drew 161,751 fans for 34 home games, an average of 4,758 per game. That put USC seventh in total attendance and sixth in average attendance.

Clemson drew 140,040 fans (11th nationally) in 30 home games at Doug Kingsmore Stadium for an average of 4,668 per game, good for eighth place.

The Citadel was the only other state school in the DI rankings, drawing 33,844 fans to rank 48th. The Bulldogs averaged 967 fans per game.

LSU led the nation in total attendance (311,187) and average attendance (7,590). The Bayou Bengals were playing their final season at Alex Box Stadium.

In Division II, Newberry ranked 17th in total attendance (5,126) and 9th in average attendance (302). USC Aiken ranked 12th in total attendance (6,257). The Pacers averaged 160 fans per home game.
