Nick Ciuffo, a 14-year-old freshman catcher at Wando High School, has committed to play for the University of South Carolina beginning in 2014, Phil Kornblutt. Ciuffo is a son of Tony Ciuffo, the radio voice of College of Charleston basketball.
Smoak honored
Former University of South Carolina first baseman Justin Smoak, now a Texas Rangers prospect, has been named the International Baseball Federation's player of the year in the senior athletic category. Smoak was named the MVP as the USA won the 2009 Baseball World Cup.
Chants' Wheeler honored
Coastal Carolina pitcher Cody Wheeler is the No. 43 prospect in The College Baseball Blog's countdown of the top 100 players for 2010.
Big South in decline?

Everett stays with Tigers
Shortstop Adam Everett, a former USC star, has reached a one-year deal to stay with the Detroit Tigers.
