Tanner addresses new bats, other topics
Prior to his speaking engagement in Greenville earlier this week, I got to ask USC coach Ray Tanner about several topics for my "real" job with The Greenville News. Among other things, he says the new rules regarding bats are likely to reduce the number of home runs hit.

  • I've also interviewed Furman coach Ron Smith about fall practice and will post a link to the story once it is published.

    Big 12 changes tournament format
The Big 12 Conference on Wednesday decided to change its tournament format from round-robin pool play (similar to the ACC) to double-elimination brackets (similar to the SEC) to set up a championship game. I wish the ACC would do the same. Every game in a tournament ought to count, and a round-robin format sometimes produced meaningless game.

  • A couple of MLB notes

    1. I'm looking forward to seeing the replay Game 7 of the 1960 World Series on the MLB Network in December. A kinescope (film made of the live telecast) recently was discovered in Bing Crosby's wine cellar. Crosby was part-owner of the Pirates for a time. The 1960 Series is the first one I can really remember.

    2. Game 3 of the 2010 World Series will start at 6:57 p.m., the earliest start for a Series game in more than a decade. Hallelujah. Maybe MLB is finally realizing it needs to make its marquee event more kid-friendly in an effort to develop fans.
