Powell plans benefit
Landon Powell, the former University of South Carolina star who plays for the Oakland A's, is hosting a Nov. 7 event at Fluor Field in Greenville to raise funds for and increase awareness of organ/tissue donation needs. Powell, who lives in Greenville, has been diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis and eventually may need a liver transplant. For you old-time USC football fans, Powell is married to the former Allyson Davies, daughter of ex-Gamecocks defensive back Bo Davies, the school record holder with 14 career interceptions.

    Trevor Gretzky, son of former hockey great Wayne Gretzky, has committed to play baseball for Tony Gwynn at San Diego State. Gwynn, by the way, recently was diagnosed with cancer in a salivary gland.
