This is the seventh in a series of preseason previews of state teams. Thanks to Ben Waring of the Sports Information office at The Citadel for the help.

Palmetto State Baseball: What is the outlook for your team this season?

  • See preview

  • PSB: Based on what you saw in fall workouts, which newcomers seem most ready to contribute from the start of the season?

BW: It looks more and more like the left side of the infield will both consist of true freshman as Drew DeKerlegand looks to take the reins at third base. Redshirt sophomore Damon Arids is also competing for time at third base. Freshman Calvin Orth has ran away with the starting job at shortstop. The backend of the starting rotation could see some freshman flavor as well in Justin Russell and Bryce Hines. Middle relief also could see some fresh faces with three left-handed freshman coming into this class. (Logan Cribb, Cam Grimsley, David Leeth)

PSB: Based on what you saw in fall workouts, what area of your team is of the most concern entering the season?
BW: 75% of the infield had to be replaced for the 2011 season so that could be an area that starts out slow as they learn to mesh. The bullpen and middle relief is another area that was hit hard with graduation and will need to see some newcomers step-up in 2011.

PSB: Which returnees from 2010 do you think fans will see the most improvement in for 2011?
BW: First baseman Justin Mackert had a slow start to 2010 but was on fire to end the season as he was named SoCon Tournament MVP. Look for the junior to be the anchor of the infield and pick up where he left off last season. DH/OF Brad Felder also came through in the clutch for the Bulldogs after starting out slowly, look for a solid year from him.
