Elon, CofC share SoCon favorite's role; Pegler honored

Elon was the coaches' pick to win the 2013 Southern Conference baseball championship while College of Charleston topped a media poll, the league announced today.

Meanwhile, Cougars pitcher Matt Pegler, a former Riverside High star, was selected preseason pitcher of the year by the coaches.

Elon received five first-place votes from league coaches, Second-place Western Carolina and third-place College of Charleston each received three.

Furman was picked to finish seventh, The Citadel eighth and Wofford 10th by the coaches.

College of got 10 of 18 votes in a media poll. Second-place Elon received four, third-place Samford three and fourth-place Appalachian State one. The Citadel was picked seventh, Furman eighth and Wofford 10th by the media.

Pegler was joined on the first-team preseason all-SoCon squad by teammate Brandon Murray, an outfielder. Also on the squad was Appalachian State shortstop Will Callaway, an Eastside High product.

Second-team selections included pitcher Brandon Yarusi of Wofford, Furman outfielder Will Muzika and College of Charleston third baseman Bradley Goodson.

All 11 SoCon teams open their season Feb. 15.
