PALMETTOSTATEBASEBALL.COM CO-TEAMS OF THE WEEK, MAY 13-19

Spartanburg Methodist coach Tim Wallace (right) goes over Mooneyham Field ground rules with Walters State coach Ken Campbell and umpires prior to a doubleheader earlier this year. The two schools will meet in the first round of the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo., beginning Saturday. The schools split their regular-season meetings.

Coker (4-0), won NCAA DII Southeast Regional
beat Armstrong Atlantic, USC Aiken, Mount Olive and Georgia College

Spartanburg Methodist  (3-0), won NJCAA Eastern District Tournament
beat Potomac State twice, beat ASA College once

First, my apologies to Coker for not having a photo of coach Dave Schmotzer. I was able to work in a trip to Spartanburg earlier this season. Hartsville's a longer trek from suburban Greenville.

Why co-teams of the week? Because both Coker and Spartanburg Methodist qualified for the World Series in their respective divisions.

Coker came out of the losers' bracket  to win the Conference Carolinas Tournament  and earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs - the school's first postseason bid in NCAA baseball.  The Cobras then swept through the Southeast Regional in Mount Olive, N.C,, beating Conference Carolinas regular-season champ Mount Olive and Peach Belt Conference . regular-season champ USC Aiken in the process. Both schools were ranked No. 1 in the nation during the regular season.

Now, Coker heads back into the Tar Heel State for the DII World Series in at the USA Complex in Cary, N.C. Play begins on Saturday.

The postseason is an expectation at Spartanburg Methodist, which has a decades-long record of success and turning out impact players on the four-year-college and Major League level.

Coach Tim Wallace's team earned the Region X regular-season title on the strength on a late-season series victory over Louisburg.

The Pioneers followed that by sweeping through the Region X Tournament.  This week, the Pioneers won three games in as many days to win the Eastern District Tournament in Keyser, W.Va. Two of the wins came over host Potomac State.

The Pioneers join other district winners for the NJCAA College World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. They'll open with Walters State, a team they split a regular-season doubleheader with in Spartanburg.
