Friday's tournament roundup

ACC
* Clemson's drive to reach Sunday's tournament title game hit a roadblock when the Tigers were shut out by Georgia Tech, 3-0. Dusty Isaacs, a starter in previous years but a reliever in 2014, combined with Sam Clay to shut out the Tigers on four hits. It was a 1-0 game until Georgia Tech got a two-run homer in the top of the ninth.

The biggest positive for Clemson was a solid start by Clate Schmidt. He'll be needed wherever the Tigers go in the NCAA Tournament next week.

The negatives included 13 strikeouts by Clemson batters and three errors from the Tigers' infield. Granted, the errors didn't directly lead to any runs, but Clemson doesn't need to have the defense be springing links this time of year.

* Also, sixth-place Maryland's 5-3 win over Florida State in Friday's first game and Virginia's 3-2 victory over North Carolina in the nightcap assured Maryland of being that pool's representative in the championship game on Sunday.

Duke, which finished fourth in the regular season, can claim the other pool spot with a win over Miami on Saturday. If Miami wins, ninth-place Georgia Tech will go to the finals.

Big South
Coastal Carolina's 15-11 loss to Campbell ended what has been a stinker for the season, results-wise, for the Chanticleers. They entered the season in rebuilding mode, then lost some of their top players to injuries and finished with a losing record.

They fell behind early on Friday, then were rallying in the seventh inning weather delayed the game for hours. This isn't to suggest they'd have won without a delay, just that stoppage may have affected momentum.

Of course, committing six errors is never a recipe for success, so things even out.

Host Winthrop spent Friday watching the remaining teams use up their pitching staffs just to get to where the Eagles are -- in Saturday's semifinals. Winthrop can reach Sunday's title game - and play for an NCAA Tournament bid - by beating either Liberty or Radford (they played Friday's late game).

Both Winthrop and other unbeaten semifinalist High Point must lose twice Saturday.

CAA
* College of Charleston moved into Saturday's championship round of the tournament by beating regular-season champion William & Mary on Friday. But the Tribe beat host UNC Wilmington later Friday to join the Cougars in the finals. William & Mary must beat the College twice Saturday. CofC needs one win.

SEC
* Arkansas rallied to beat Mississippi, 6-1, and Florida continued its comeback from the losers bracket by ousting Mississippi State, 5-1.

The SEC cross-brackets for the semifinals and also returns to single-elimination for Saturday. Arkansas plays LSU and Kentucky plays Florida for the spots in Sunday's single-elimination championship game.

SoCon
* Wofford continued to extend the school record for victories in and season by beating Davidson, 10-7, in an elimination game. The Terriers can reach the tournament finals by beating Samford twice  Saturday.

* Furman, which earned a bye into Saturday's semifinals, had Friday off but did learn it would be playing Georgia Southern. The Eagles sent Appalachian State out of the conference as a baseball member on a losing note. The Paladins get to chances to do the same to the Eagles on Saturday.
