Lander named regional host; USC Aiken gets at-large bid

Sunday night was momentous for Lander's baseball program. The Bearcats wrapped up the Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship with a 15-5 victory over Montevallo, then barely a half-hour later were named hosts for the Southeast Regional of the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The tournament will be played this Thursday through Sunday at Dolny Stadium in Greenwood. Game times had not been announced as of late Sunday night. Lander won the PBC regular-season title and has been ranked No. 2 in most NCAA national rankings most of the season.

The Bearcats (47-6) are the No. 1 seed and will play No. 6 Catawba (33-18), the South Atlantic Conference Tournament champion, in the first round. Second-seeded Mount Olive (40-11), the Conference Carolinas regular-season and tournament champion, will play fifth-seeded Georgia College (34-15) and No. 3 Columbus State (36-15) and No. 4 USC Aiken (36-15) will complete the first-round matchup in the double-elimination event.

All three at-large teams are from the Peach Belt. Wingate (34-17), which shared the SAC regular-season title with Catawba, and Erskine (34-17) of Conference Carolinas had the best records of the teams selected.

The Southeast Regional is one of eight six-team events across the nation to determine the eight teams for the NCAA Division II World Series in Cary, N.C., later this year.
