PSB poll, March 1: When should baseball season begin for NCAA Division I schools?

It's been a wet, cold start to college baseball seaosn in South Carolina and other parts of the South. The conditions are likely comparable to what schools north of us face the first month or so of the season.

Last month West Virginia coach Randy Mazey, a former player and assistant coach at Clemson, proposed that college baseball season not begin until around April 1, with the College World Series being pushed back to August.

Here's a link to my earlier post on the subject. Inside are links to three articles -- including Mazey's -- on the matter.

I'm against the proposal for several reasons, but I thought it would make for a good PalmettoStateBaseball.com poll.

I listed three suggested windows for the season:

1. A February start with the College World Series in June (essentially what we have now).

2. A March start with the College World Series in July.

3. An April start with the College World Series in August (essentially Mazey's proposal).

Rudy,

You should have added another option. In my opinion, the college baseball season needs to be shortened. 56 games, plus conference tournament, plus NCAA playoffs, is simply too much. Baseball players put in 40-50 hours per week in baseball related activities. And they do this BOTH semesters. It's no wonder it takes most kids 5-6 years to graduate.

I'd keep the start date where it is and cut 10-12 games from the spring schedule. You could actually shift those games to the fall if you wanted to, but I don't think that's necessary.
