PalmettoStateBaseball.com co-teams of the week, May 11-17: Clemson, USC Sumter

(tie)
Clemson (4-0 for the week)
(went 1-0 vs. Furman, went 3-0 vs. Florida State)

USC Sumter (3-1 for the week)
(went 2-1 vs. Potomac State, went 1-0 vs. Monroe, qualified for NJCAA DI World Series)

I don't like to award ties, but given the circumstances I saw no way to avoid it.

Clemson fell behind 10-0 after two innings in a midweek game against Furman in Greenville before roaring back for a 23-15 win.

As good as that was, that paled in comparison to Clemson's weekend. Coach Jack Leggett's team swept Florida State - a consensus Top 10 team nationally - in Tallahassee for the first time ever. And none of the games was particularly close.

The week almost certainly will put some pep in the Tigers' step as they play in the ACC Tournament this week.

USC Sumter, meanwhile, won the NJCAA's Eastern District Tournament in Uniondale, N.Y., to qualify for its first junior college World series.

Coach Tim Medlin's team beat tournament host Monroe and Potomac State by comfortable margins to advance to Sunday's championship round.

Potomac State rallied to win Sunday's first game, 5-2 and force a winner-take-all finale. The Fire Ants were up to the challenge, winning 4-2  to punch their ticket for Grand Junction, Colo.

It marks the third straight year that a South Carolina has qualified for the the World Series. Spartanburg Methodist went in both 20`13 and 2014.
