Palmetto State Baseball team of the week, Jan. 29-31: Newberry

Newberry (3-0 for the week)
(beat NCAA DII No. 20 Lynn, NCAA DII No. 13 Nova Southeastern and Barry)

Coach Russell Triplett's Wolves (political correctness be darned; I still want to call them the Indians) opened the season by participating in the South Atlantic Conference/Sunshine State Conference Challenge in Florida and did very well for themselves.

Newberry's first 11 batters reached base and the Wolves scored 11 first-inning runs against No. 20 Lynn. Lynn scored the next eight runs, but Newberry held on for a 13-9 victory.

A three-run first sparked the Wolves an 8-4 win over No. 13 Nova Southeastern on Saturday and a six-run first paced the way for an 11-9 win over Barry on Sunday.

For the three game Florida swing, Newberry scored 32 runs -- 20 in the first inning.

As a team, Newberry hit .376 and stole eight bases. They open their home schedule this Friday with a home game against Belmont Abbey.
