Planning your week, May 23-29

If postseason college baseball is your thing, this is the week for you.

Nine of the state's NCAA Division I teams qualified for their conference tournaments. Clemson, Coastal Carolina and South Carolina are locks for the NCAA Tournament. The other six teams need to win their conference tournament to qualify.

* On Monday, either Lander or USC Aiken will punch a ticket to the NCAA Division II World Series later this month in Cary, N.C. The Peach Belt Conference rivals play for the sixth time this season when they meet in the Southeast Region final in Columbus, Ga.

USC Aiken swept the three-game regular-season series and won a fourth meeting in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. But Lander won Sunday's game in the regional and thus has the edge entering Monday. If Lander wins, the Bearcats advance. If USC Aiken wins at noon, they would meet for a seventh time later Monday.

* The Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament opens Tuesday in Durham with a pair of play-in games, but Clemson doesn't play until  11 a.m. Thursday against Virginia. In fact, all three Clemson games in pool play start at 11 a.m. I think a case could be made that the ACC shafted the Tigers by putting them in the early game all three days.  On the other hand, a case could be made that Clemson knows its game will start on time each day (unless rain forces scheduling changes) and plan ins pregame routine accordingly.

After four days of pool play, the two pool winners meet for the ACC title on Sunday.

* The Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament begins Wednesday in Nashville. USC Upstate, the only state team in the conference, didn't qualify for the six-team field.

* The Big South Conference Tournament starts Tuesday at the Lexington County Ballpark in Lexington with Coastal Carolina the No. 1 seed. A tournament title would bolster Coastal's resume to be a host team in the NCAA Division  I Tournament later this month.  Presbyterian is in the same bracket as Coastal Carolina, while Winthrop is in the opposite bracket. The two bracket champions will meet for the title Saturday. Charleston Southern did not qualify.

* College of Charleston is the host for the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament and will play Elon in one of three first-round games on Wednesday in Mount Pleasant. The championship game is set for Saturday.

* South Carolina gets to be a spectator for Tuesday's four play-in games in the Southeastern Conference Tournament in Hoover, Ala. On Wednesday, the East Division Gamecocks will play the winner of No. 7 Mississippi vs. No. 10 Georgia.

The Gamecocks are on a six-game losing streak in Hoover. Winning a game or two would cement their prospects of being a national seed for the NCAA Tournament.

The SEC final is set for Sunday.

* The Southern Conference Tournament returns to Greenville's Fluor Field, beginning with Tuesday morning's play-in game between VMI and The Citadel. That winner advances to the main eight-team bracket of the double-elimination event which continues through Sunday.

Furman opens the second day of the tournament with a 9 a.m. game against East Tennessee State, while Wofford opens the afternoon session at 4 p.m. by playing Western Caroilina.
