Happy Rocky Colavito's birthday.

Johnson joins Smith at Appalachian State
Lander's interim head coach Britt Johnson is joining old boss Kermit Smith's staff at Appalachian State. Smith lead Lander for the NCAA Division I school earlier this summer. A few weeks later Johnson was named interim head coach.

Commentary: The move suggests that Johnson was told the school would be hiring someone else as the permanent head coach.

Crusaders working on new digs
A post on North Greenville baseball account shows some artist's renderings of a new baseball facility. I see no information on the school's athletics web site offering specifics. I don't know if the new facility would be built at the Ashmore Field location or elsewhere. The hiring of Landon Powell has helped elevate the program's visibility and built on previous success by Beauford Sanders, Travis Henson and other former head coaches.

CWS legend dies
Steve Pivovar, who covered the College World Series for decades for the Omaha World-Herald newspaper. has died after an extended illness. I was privileged to cover two College World Series and I think I recognize his face from the 2012 event, but I can't say that I ever had a conversation with him. I hate I didn't, because it's apparent we shared a passion for college baseball.
