State schedule, March 17-19

* Clemson returns to ACC play by hosting Virginia this weekend.

* South Carolina opens Southeastern Conference play with a trip to Tennessee. No. 1 starter Clarke Schmidt will not pitch Friday's opener because of a minor oblique strain.

* Coastal Carolina opens its Sun Belt Conference schedule with a visit to Texas State, while College of Charleston has a nonconference test at Nebraska.

* Charleston Southern is at Longwood and Winthrop is at UNC Asheville on the Big South Conference's opening weekend.

* Furman, Presbyterian, The Citadel, USC Upstate and Wofford all are at home for nonconference series over the weekend.

* SIAC play begins for Benedict and Claflin with weekend home series vs. Miles and Spring Hill respectively, while USC Beaufort continued Sun Conference play by entertaining St. Thomas.

* NJCAA Region 10 rivals USC Salkehatchie and Spartanburg Methodist meet in Spartanburg, but the games do not count in the region schedule. With the region down to six Division I teams, league play begins later and teams had to scramble to fill a schedule.
