Four schools host multiple-team events

Coastal Carolina, Presbyterian, USC Upstate and Wofford all will play host to multiple teams over the course of a weekend in February.

* Coastal once again is the site of the Baseball at the Beach Tournament, which has been played in Conway in February for several seasons. This year there are two weekends. Duke, George Mason and Indiana will join the Chanticleers from Feb. 16-18 in a round-robin type setup. A week later, Ball State, Cincinnati and Illinois are the other competitors.

* Wofford will play host to Towson and Bucknell on Feb. 16-18 for a total of five games at Russell C. King Field.

* A week later, USC Upstate will play host to the One Spartanburg Inc. Classic at Harley Stadium Feb. 23-25 with Quinnipiac, Canisius and St. Joseph's the competition.

* While I don't know if the games will be promoted as part of the One Spartanburg Classic, Presbyterian will play host to those same three teams in a rotation along with Gardner-Webb just across the border in Boiling Springs, N.C.

Neutral sites busy

Greenville's Fluor Field, SRP Park in North Augusta and Lexington County Baseball Stadium all will host multiple neutral-site games this season.

* Michigan State is back at its seasonal home away from home in Greenville for games the first two weekends of March. Florida State is among the competitors March 1-3, with Western Carolina on the docket March 8-10.

Later in the season, Clemson plays USC Upstate and South Carolina faces both USC Upstate and Presbyterian in downtown Greenville.

* SRP Park in North Augusta has at least five games, including two involving Palmetto State schools. USC faces Georgia State March 12 and USC Aiken plays neighboring rival Augusta March 26.

* Lexington County Baseball Stadium has a busy stretch in March as several snowbird teams play multiple teams over an eight-day span. In addition, Florence-Darlington Tech, USC Salkehatchie and USC Sumter will play games there to get familiar with the facility, which serves as site of the NJCAA Region 10 Tournament May. The Lexington stadium also is home field for P27 Academy, a high school/postgraduate program.

* The only college game I can find for Segra Park in Columbia is the March 2 Clemson-South Carolina game.

* I have been unable to find a schedule for college games at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.

* Two games involving state teams are set for Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte. South Carolina meets North Carolina April 9 and Clemson faces Charlotte May 7.  The view of Charlotte's skyscrapers makes for a beautiful background setting.

All games and sites are subject to changes. For instance, a few games were added to the Fluor Field schedule during the season in 2023.

Stingers' opening series canceled

Florence-Darlington Tech's scheduled season-opening home series with Bryant & Stratton has been canceled because of prospects of bad weather in the area over the weekend. The teams had been scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game on Sunday. Tech's season is now scheduled to begin with a Feb. 2 game against Chattahoochee Valley in the Panama City Beach (Fla.) JuCo Classic.

The Stingers will play several home games at Carolina Bank Field this season, including the home opener with Harford Feb. 16. The first on-campus action is a Feb. 17 doubleheader with CCBC Dundalk.

The FD Tech cancellations leave USC Salkehatchie's Sunday home doubleheader with Walters State as the only games on this weekend's Palmetto State schedule.  That was originally to be a three-game Friday-Saturday series.

Want to buy Collegiate Baseball Newspaper?

In my first Podcast of the year on Sunday I mentioned it looked like Collegiate Baseball Newspaper would be ceasing operation after 65+ years. Posts on the baseballnews.com website indicated the website and newspaper were for sale. On Monday, I got an e-mail reply from publisher/owner Lou Pavlovich confirming that he is retiring after 52 years of running the publication.

In his e-mail, he stated that he had been in negotiations to sell the enterprise about three years ago, but one of the potential investors changed his mind. Pavlovich said he told his wife at the time that if they did not sell the paper in the next two years that they would retire in October, 2023.

That is what they have done. They are preparing their office to be put up for sale.

Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, started by Pavlovich's father in 1958, was the leading source of national news about college baseball for many years and had the oldest national rankings.

He told me that the newspaper and Website are still for sale. If interested, contact him at cbn@baseball.news.com. I'll be glad to accept a finder's fee if you make a deal.

Banquets set

Here is some information on preseason banquets involving state teams. I do not know if there are any tickets remaining, but offer this for information only.

Season tickets on sale

Many of the state's programs have season tickets on sale. Some of the smaller schools offer a season ticket at a price far less expensive than the cost of buying a ticket to each game individually.

In addition to season tickets and single game tickets, schools like Clemson and South Carolina offer a "flex" schedule where you can buy a group of tickets for a discount price, then apply as many as you want to a particular game or series of games, depending on ticket availability and some  restrictions imposed by individual schools.

Many schools have ticket information links at the baseball pages on their athletics website. Links to baseball pages are at the right of this page.

I have used the "flex" option a couple of seasons and have found it to fit my needs.

Updating some signees

As I mentioned in Sunday's Podcast, I am quite often slack when it comes to reporting offseason news. Below are some recruiting/transfers classes I had not reported.

Don't give up on me .... yet

I'm really struggling to get motivated for the 2024 college baseball season. I have most of the state schedules downloaded and imported so I can format them, but it's frustrating that some schools don't have schedules posted yet and others have game times as to be announced less than a month from when they're to be played. I know one option is to give up compiling a daily schedule/scoreboard and just concentrate on writing or my podcast, but I don't want to make that move.
