The six new head coaches at state NCAA Division I schools began their tenures successfully on the opening day of the season for that division.

Karl Kuhn (Charleston Southern), Paul Mainieri (South Carolina), Mike McGuire (Winthrop), Kevin Schnall (Coastal Carolina), Kane Sweeney (USC Upstate), Russell Triplett (The Citadel) all left the field as winners. McGuire got a doubleheader sweep at Winthrop.

North Greenville's Landon Powell got his 400th career coaching win in the opener of a doubleheader at Shorter. Game 2 was in a 2-2 tie when it was halted by darkness. It will be completed prior to the series finale on Saturday.

Clemson, playing in the most high-profile game of the day, rallied to beat Oklahoma State, 6-5, in the Shriners Children's College Showdown.
