During my self-imposed six-month hiatus from blogging I missed definitive information that Denmark Tech would field a team in 2026.
The school announced plans to field a program last year, and John Travis Odom made several posts on X about recruiting for the Panthers as head coach.
When I checked Odom's account earlier this month, it stated he was a high school coach. I figured Denmark Tech was waiting another year or had changed its plans. Saturday, he responded to an earlier message and said he resigned after some confusion over the program's status.
Anyway, I got a copy of Morris' schedule Sunday night and it shows a doubleheader against Denmark Tech to open the season Feb. 5. Hornets coach Zay Paul gave me Isaac Wilson's III name as Denmark Tech head coach, and an Internet search revealed a Sept. 19 release from Denmark Tech detailing Wilson's hiring.
Wilson, a Morris graduate, most recently was an academic/success coach at Coker. He also has served as an assistant baseball coach at Wilson High School and an assistant softball coach at Voorhees.
Denmark Tech is the only S.C. member of the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association, a sanctioning body different from NCAA, NAIA, NCCAA or NJCAA. The school last fielded a baseball team in 2004.
Denmark Tech is a two-year school and competes in NJCAA Region 10 in other sports. The Panthers will play a combination of four-year and two-year schools this season, with the opener at Morris their only games against an in-state team.
The Panthers will play home games at Mirmow Field in Orangeburg, sharing that facility with Claflin.
Denmark Tech gives the state 33 teams for the 2026 season. There were 33 in 2025, but Limestone closed after its springs semester.
