A pair of Clemson signees and Tigers' two-way star Caden Grice were the only players with direct connections to South Carolina to be drafted in Sunday's first round of the Major League Baseball Draft.
Outfielder Dillon Head of Flossmoor High School in Homewood, Ill., was the first-round pick of the San Diego Padres. He was the 25th pick overall.
Shortstop Sammy Stafura of Walter Panas High School in New York was the second-round selection of the Cincinnati Reds. He was the 43rd pick overall.
Grice, a Riverside High grad and the 2023 winner of the Jon Olerud Award as the top two-way player in the country, was the 64th overall pick. The Arizona Diamondbacks listed him as a pitcher in making him their compensation B pick between the second and third rounds.
The draft continues at 2 p.m. Monday with rounds 3-10 and 2 p.m. Tuesday with the remaining rounds.
First Round

43: Cincinnati Reds, Sammy Stafura, SS, Clemson recruit.
