Game of the day
USC Salkehatchie 4, Catawba Valley 2
Ericangiel Valentin's two-run triple capped a three-run rally in the seventh and the Indians held on for its first win of the season.
Mason Hutto's RBI groundout in the second inning put Salkehatchie on top, but Catawba Valley scored two runs in the third in its effort to sweep the three-game series in Hickory, N.C.
Bradley Garland and Gavin Creede drew walks to open the Indians' seventh, prompting a Catawba Valley bullpen call.
Hutto singled to load the bases and Reese Jordan followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the score.
Valentin then sent a shot to center field, where the RedHawks' Carter Lindsay made a diving attempt for a catch. He was unsuccessful, and two runs scored as he chased the ball down.
Salkehatchie's Gage Lewis (1-0) left with two on and one out in the seventh. Reliever Brice Miller came in to quell the Catawba Valley threat.
The RedHawks threatened in the eighth and ninth, too, but reliever Elvin Pantoja to get the final two outs with runners on first and second.
The game was moved from Heinkel-Alley Stadium to the turf of Durham Field at Lenoir-Rhyne because of conditions.
Coach Jeremy Joye's club is idle next weekend, when it has doubleheaders against East Georgia (away on Saturday, at home on Sunday).
