Furman set for season

Furman has posted a preview of its opening weekend. The Paladins play Michigan State, Northwestern and Miami (Ohio) at Fluor Field in downtown Greenville.

Presbyterian has posted a preview of its opening series at Savannah State.

Bulldogs get going

A tournament involving three other teams helps The Citadel get its season under way this weekend at Riley Park in Charleston. George Mason, High Point and Kansas State also are involved.

Gamecocks get under way

USC opens its season Saturday with a series against Liberty. Former coach and current AD Ray Tanner will be honored in ceremonies before the game. It will be the head-coaching debut for Chad Holbrook and it comes against ex-Gamecocks assistant Jim Toman. Holbrook said the final 35-man roster would be released Friday, probably by 10 a.m. Here's USC's preview release, as well as a link to video.

Sand Sharks have big series

USC Beaufort tries to bounce back from a 1-2 start to its Sun Conference season when it plays host to league power Embry-Riddle this weekend.

Gators lose Whitson

Star Florida pitcher Karsten Whitson has been lost for the season because of shoulder problems,'s Kendall Rogers reports. The Gators generally have been picked to finish second to Vanderbilt in the SEC East this season.

Four projected for NCAA

Clemson, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston  and South Carolina will be NCAA Tournament teams, according to's projections of the 64-team field. USC is listed as a regional host and No. 1 regional seed. Clemson and Coastal Carolina are pegged as 2's and College of Charleston a 3. There are 10 SEC teams and 8 ACC teams in the projections.

Florida and Florida State were both coming into down years, and the loss of the #2 starter for each can't help. If Clemson can hold down the fort against the teams they should beat and hold serve against the Coastal powers, they might finish second in the division despite the youth.
