Beer goes to left field
Sophomore Seth Beer made his first career start in left field in Clemson's 9-2 win over Wofford on Tuesday. He had a single and a walk as he extended his on-base streak to 68 games.
Andrew Cox started at first base, where Beer began the season, and went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. K.J. Bryant played right field, where Beer spent most of last season, and also went 2-for-4. He doubled, tripled, scored two runs and drove in two.
Williams gets in on defense
Clemson catcher Chris Williams made his first appearance of the season as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning of the Wofford game. Williams, the projected starting catcher this season, suffered a hand injury during a preseason scrimmage earlier this month and was projected to be out four to six weeks.
Coach Monte Lee said Williams got his stitches out on Monday and immediately went into the batting cage for work. He also took part in batting practice before the Wofford game.
Kyle Wilkie started the season in the lineup at catcher, but Robert Jolly has replaced him the last five games. He has hit safely in all five games (10-for-19) with 10 runs scored.
Mack is torrid
Voorhees coach Justin Thomas reports infielder Garrett Mack from Goose Creek is batting .650 (26-for-40) with nine runs and 12 RBIs through 12 games.

Clemson/USC series streaming plans set
The Greenville Drive report Saturday's Clemson-South Carolina game (1 p.m.) in Greenville will be streamed over the Internet at MiLB.TV. Friday's game (6:30 p.m.) in Clemson will stream on the ACC Network Extra. Sunday's game (1:30 p.m.) in Columbia will stream on SEC Network+.
There are ways (HDMI cables, Apple TV, Roku, etc.) to get computer streams transferred over to regular TVs. The picture quality is usually great and it's virtually indistinguishable from a cable/broadcast feed.
Claflin sets series in Lowcountry
Clafin's SIAC series against Morehouse will be played in the Charleston area March 24-26. The Friday (11:30 a.m.) and Sunday (1:30 p.m.) games will be played at Collins Park in North Charleston. The Saturday game (4 p.m.) will be played at West Ashley High School.

Composite of 5 major NCAA DI polls, Feb. 27
Each week during the regular season, CollegeBaseballInsider.com posts a composite poll of five
national NCAA Division I rankings. In the table below, I've added
PerfectGame.org to the mix for a six-ranking composite.
The USA TODAY coaches poll doesn't publish another poll until later in the season, but the other five polls offered updated rankings today.
TCU is No. 1 in all five rankings.
South Carolina is seventh, Clemson is tied for 17th with East Carolina and Coastal Carolina is tied for 24th with Georgia Tech.
There are seven ACC teams and six SEC teams in the composite Top 25 ranking. The +/- represents rise or fall from last week's composite rankings.
26. Oklahoma State 14; 27. (tie) Houston 11; Oklahoma 11; 29. Baylor 9; 30. Arkansas 8; 31. Virginia 7; 32. UCLA 6; 33. Miami 5; 34. Dallas Baptist 4; 35. Cal Santa Barbara 3; 36. Utah 2; 37. Mississippi State 1.
Dropped out: Miami (No. 20 last week); Oklahoma State (tie-No. 23); UNC Wilmington (No. 25).
Poll key: NCBWA -- National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association; BBA -- Baseball America; USAT -- USA TODAY coaches; CB -- Collegiate Baseball; D1 -- D1Baseball.com; PG -- PerfectGame.org
Points are awarded on a descending scale, from 25 points for a first-place vote to 1 for a 25th-place vote. Some polls ranked more than 25 teams, but I kept it at the top 25 for consistency's sake. In the event of ties, the points are divided evenly among the tied teams.

Wrapping up the weekend, Feb. 26
* Biggest surprise (positive): Southern Wesleyan winning its Conference Carolinas opener over North Greenville, 5-2. North Greenville rebounded to outscore the Warriors 34-1 in a Saturday doubleheader to win the series.
* Biggest shocker (negative): South Carolina pitchers hitting nine batters and the Gamecocks defense committing for errors in a 2-1 series win over Wright State. USC will need to straighten out both areas if it wants to be an elite team.
* Game of the weekend No. 1: USC Upstate 21, Dayton 20, 12 innings (Saturday): The Spartans fell behind 16-6 before rallying to win the marathon game. There were nine lead changes.
* Game of the weekend No. 2: Clemson 1, Elon 0, 13 innings (Friday): Tigers pitchers struck out 23 batters and Seth Beer singled in the winning run. Beer was 0-5 before that at-bat. He has failed to reach base in only one of his 69 career games at Clemson. His streak currently is at 67.
* Series of the weekend: Presbyterian going 2-1 vs. Stony Brook. The Blue Hose won one-run games on Friday and Sunday. Stony Brook won the middle game, 8-3, with a five-run 11th inning.
* Yes, we have no hits: Spartanburg Methodist's Ridge Chapman (Wade Hampton High) struck out 11 batters in a complete-game no-hitter against Roane State in the opener of a Saturday doubleheader. A few hours later, Florence-Darlington Tech's Tate Autry (Chester High) threw a no-hitter and struck out 15 as the Stingers beat Cecil. On Sunday, Lucas Coan (Greenville High) got within an out of another no-hitter for SMC before New River spoiled his bid.
* Worth the wait: Anderson's Saturday doubleheader with No. 22 Lenoir-Rhyne was interrupted for more than three hours in Game 1 when the home plate umpire got dust in his eyes (it was windy, remember) and a replacement had to be summoned to Memorial Stadium. The Bears held a 6-5 lead at the interruption, but Anderson quickly scored three runs and held on for the victory en route to a doubleheader split.
* Please don't go: Newberry and Trejon Smith probably hated to see Goldey-Beacom leave town after the Wolves' four-game sweep. Newberry scored 74 runs (29 on Sunday) on 72 hits. Smith was 11-for-14 with six doubles, a triple, a homer, nine runs scored and 16 RBIs. The Wolves had school-record 27 RBIs and tied the school record with 26 hits in the series finale.
* Coastal Carolina fell behind Georga Mason 8-0 on Sunday, but scored the game's final nine runs to win. Matt Beaird's two-out single in the ninth drove in the tying and winning runs.
* South Carolina entered the season as a consensus Top 5 team nationally, but the Gamecocks' 5-1 Sunday loss to Wright State dropped the record to 5-3. A loss to Wright State -- a projected NCAA Tournament team - is no disgrace, but USC hasn't looked like a national title contender so far. The weekend starting rotation of Clarke Schmidt, Wil Crowe and Adam Hill has been as good as advertised, but USC has struggled defensively on what appear to be routine plays and has shown an early penchant to failing to get big hits in key situations.
* Furman capped a 3-1 week with a 10-6 win over Monmouth. The Paladins had five home runs among their 39 hits in the series.
* USC Aiken stretched its winning streak to five games with a sweep of Young Harris. The Pacers have scored 15 runs or more in three of their last four games.
* USC Lancaster improved to 18-3 by winning three of four games over the weekend to cap a 5-1 week.
* Charleston Southern had a second consecutive 2-1 weekend to improve to 4-2 under interim coach Adam Ward.
* J.P. Sears struck out 12 batters in seven innings as a highlight of The Citadel's 2-1 series win over Delaware State.
* College of Charleston pitchers picked up 31 strikeouts in a series win over Cincinnati. After splitting one-run games on Friday and Saturday, the Cougars won by two runs on Sunday.
* Zach Piazza homered in all three games as Limestone got a 2-1 series win over Barton. Piazza has 10 home runs in 17 games. Garrett Lowery homered once to give him nine for the Chase Allen had three homers to improve his total to seven.
* Coker picked up a nice 2-1 series win for first-year coach Luke Harrigan in South Atlantic Conference play at Tusculum.
* Clark Scolamiero may have found a home at the top of North Greenville's batting order. For the first time this season he moved to the leadoff spot for Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Southern Wesleyan and the USC transfer responded by going 3-for-7 with a double, 2 walks, 3 stolen bases, 3 RBIs and 5 runs scored. Perhaps not coincidentally, the Crusaders had 28 hits and 34 runs in the twinbill.
* Erskine opened Conference Carolinas play with a sweep of Pfeiffer.
* Bobby Wenthe drove in nine runs as USC Beaufort went 3-0 against Warner. Wenthe has 26 RBI in 10 games this season.
* Reed Massey went 8-for-14, but Wofford dropped two of three games it played in a tournament it co-hosts with USC Upstate.
* Francis Marion dropped the finale of its series with Augusta, but the Patriots still have a lofty 13-2 record.
* Lander pulled to .500 for the first time since the first-week of the season before losing Sunday's series finale at Montevallo.
* In retrospect, Hunter Lipscomb's three-run homer in Friday's victory over Kennesaw State may have been Winthrop's biggest hit of the weekend. The eighth-inning blast led to a 4-3 victory, the Eagles' only win in the series.
* Biggest shocker (negative): South Carolina pitchers hitting nine batters and the Gamecocks defense committing for errors in a 2-1 series win over Wright State. USC will need to straighten out both areas if it wants to be an elite team.

Saturday's highlights, Feb. 25
It was a windy day in the Upstate and from the looks of the scores the ball was traveling quite well all over South Carolina on Saturday. In games played in state, 25 teams scored at least 10 runs. Also, Voorhees cracked double figures twice at Rust College and Lander took advantage of extra innings to put up 11 runs at Montevallo. Conversely, there were six shutouts across the state.
But in the hometown of the iconic Beacon Drive-In, there were runs a'plenty.
Harley Park in Spartanburg was at the epicenter of the scoring. James Madison blasted UNC Asheville, 25-9, in a neutral-site game played as part of the annual tournament hosted by USC Upstate and Wofford.
Yet, those 34 runs weren't good enough to be high-scoring game of the day on that field ... which brings us to the final game to finish and the state's:
Game of of the day: USC Upstate 21, Dayton 20, 12 innings
There were nine lead changes in the 5-hour, 18-minute game, which ended with the host Spartans scoring two runs in the bottom of the 12th to complete a rally from 10 runs down.
Dayton scored 11 runs in the fifth innings to take a 16-6 lead. But the Spartans answered with eight runs in the bottom of the inning and three more in the sixth to go up 17-16. Each team scored two in the eighth, then, the Flyers had a two-out rally in the ninth to force extra innings.
Dayton scored again the 11th but the Spartans answered again, with Drake Harris doubling in the final run.
Charlie Carpenter and Jordan Miller drove in six runs apiece for Upstate.
Across the state
* Down the road a ways, Wofford had its own big offensive day, pasting Georgetown, 18-11. Reed Massey had four singles and a double, stole two bases and drove in three runs for the Terriers.
* There were two no-hitters pitched by S.C. players on Saturday. Oddly enough, one was in Spartanburg.
* Ridge Chapman of Spartanburg Methodist struck out 11 as the Pioneers beat Roane State, 8-0, in the opener of a doubleheader split. Trent Autry of Florence-Darlington Tech struck out 15 as the Stingers beat Cecil CC, 6-0.
* The Citadel surrendered two runs in the top of the ninth, but Barrett Charpia's single in the bottom of the inning gave the Bulldgos a 6-5 win over Delaware State.
* After winning a 1-0, 13-inning game on Friday, Clemson showed its offensive prowess in a 13-5 win over Elon to clinch the series. The Tigers had 15 hits. Seth Beer singled, walked three times and was hit by a pitch. He has reached base in 66 consecutive games.
* Wil Crowe struck out nine batters in 6 1/3 innings as South Carolina beat Wright State, 10-5, to clich the series win. Hunter Taylor had two doubles and a single for the Gamecocks.
* Furman survived four Monmouth home runs to win, 12-5, and even the series at 1-1. Six Paladins had at least two hits apiece.
* West Virginia had six home runs among its 29 hits ijn a 22-9 pasting of Coastal Carolina. The Mountaineers are coached by former Clemson player and assistant Randy Mazey.
* Zach Giczewski's three-run single in the 11th inning sparked Lander to an 11-8 win at Montevallo to clinch a Peach Belt Conference series win. The Bearcats have won five straight to even their record at 7-7 after a 1-6 start.
* Francis Marion improved to 13-1 by ripping Augusta, 16-7. Five Patriots had at least three hits apiece. FMU put the game with as seven-run seventh.
* A seven-run seventh also put USC Aiken on easy street in its 15-5 win over Young Harris.
* Trejon Smith had five doubles and five RBIs as Newberry pounded Goldey-Beacom in a doubleheader. The Wolves had 30 hits and 30 runs in the sweep.
* USC Beaufort wrapped up a Sun Conference series sweep of Warner with an 11-7 win on Saturday. Bobby Wenthe continued his torrid hitting with three hits and three RBIs.
* Erskine also got a conference series sweep by beating Pfeiffer twice. Zack Bowers pitched a complete game and struck out eight in the nightcap.
* Claflin entered Saturday with a 1-11 record, but swept a doubleheader from Bluefield State as Elliott Melton had five hits.
* North Greenville bounced back from losing Friday's series opener to score 34 runs in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Southern Wesleyan.
* Anderson knocked off nationally ranked Lenoir-Rhyne, 8-6, in the opener of a doubleheader before the Bears bounced back to win the nightcap and the series.
* Chase Allen had three double and two homers as Limestone split a Conference Carolinas twinbill with Barton. The Saints won the series.
* Voorhees doubled its season wins total by beating Rust, 17-6 and 15-5, in a doubleheader.
Elsewhere
* Florida recorded back-to-back shutouts of Miami for the first time in school history with a 2-0 win.
